he New Ross Historical Society was formed on March 14, 1988 by 35 Charter Members and is located on the grounds of the Ross Farm Museum, New Ross, Nova Scotia.

Our mandate is to collect, document, preserve, interpret and make known the historical and genealogical facts of the New Ross District, formerly known as Sherbrooke.

Sherbrooke - appropriately known as "The Military Settlement" saw its first settlers on August 7th, 1816, when 172 disbanded soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars arrived under the leadership of Captain William Ross. Research not only shows our community as one of the very first "military settlements in Canada but indicates Sherbrooke was the first truly military settlement in Canada made up of soldiers from the Royal Nova Scotia Fencibles and the Royal New foundland Fencibles. They were later augmented by disbanded soldiers from the 60th or German Legion...

The New Ross historical Society has quarters at The Learning Centre, Ross Farm Museum. Microfilms, genealogies, historical publications, Maps and folders containing historical information pertaining to New Ross and beyond are housed there.
