Outliving the dinosaurs, sea turtles continue to defy the odds of survival. At nesting time, a mature female returns to the very sands where she hatched 20 years before. There, she carefully digs a nest where she will lay around 120 eggs. Repeating this ritual every two weeks over the course of several weeks, she then quietly slips back into the sea until the next nesting season. Left to fend for themselves, the hatchlings dig from their nest to begin their perilous journey. From there, they will spend two decades navigating the vast and often dangerous sea before reaching maturity. Though only one in one thousand reach adulthood, those that do live long lives. The sea turtle reminds us that perseverance through life’s greatest challenges may, in time, lead us steadily toward the life we are meant to live.
