Early summer travellers find Maritime roadsides awash with breath-taking colour as field after field burst into a riot of purples, pinks and blues. This variety is not the one you see in garden centres, which is European in origin. Lupinus Polyphyllus is, rather, a native to the Pacific northwest. My consulting botanist suggests it may have been introduced to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, by the son-in-law of Alexander Graham Bell who is known to have travelled to the west coast.
